High fructose corn syrup

Back in August (my blog called: Gluten Free) I wrote about the changes in what we eat and don't eat; I mentioned that mayonnaise, mustard and ketchup are still a part of my diet even though they are pre-made foods.
I believe 'balance' is important in every aspect of our life. I think each of us need to make life choices that are best for each one individually.
However before I purchase anything I read the ingredient list. If there are ingredients that I cannot pronounce let alone spell it is not purchased. But the biggest no-no for me is probably high fructose corn syrup!
I know that there is media debate about the lack of harm of consuming high fructose corn syrup (HFCS); however my experience has taught me that when huge sums of money are involved the facts tend to get lost in the shuffle.
Also keep in mind high fructose corn syrup is not corn syrup. They are two different products. I have probably spent 30 or more hours [not all at one time] reading about HFCS. And one website that makes it clearest is by Dr. Hyman. I highly recommend reading it.

I'm shocked at the amount of products that now contain HFCS; from tomato sauce to pickles, even some deli meats! The list seems endless and it is an effort to try and eliminate it completely from ones diet.
Here is a link to a list of food that contain HFCS: http://www.celestialhealing.net/Food_contain_HFCS.htm
Last week I wanted to buy some taco seasoning (and yes I know it's easy to make!) but I make dinner at 9:00am five days a week, and sometimes I want things to be as easy as possible! As I read the ingredients nearly every [well known] brand had HFCS in it. I was able to find the brand Casa Fiesta that did not have HFCS in it and this brand had no preservatives either.
It takes a lot of time and effort to avoid HFCS.
I am glad that HFCS was never a large part of my children's diet growing up. It started being used in the 1980's in coca cola and other sodas and has progressively increased to where we are now. A society that is unhealthy, with obesity and heart disease an epidemic.
I read that this generation will be the first generation that will not be as healthy or healthier then their parents in American history.
When the average American consumes over 60 pounds of HFCS a year. And since the introduction of this horrid product was introduced obesity rates have more than tripled and diabetes has increased more than seven times.
This is a fact that should have every parent and every person take notice and do something about it! I believe everything in moderation, however not with HFCS.
It was thought up in a lab by food manufacturers that wanted a cheaper product to use in place of sugar. Mainly since corn was plentiful in the US and sugar was imported. Remember HFCS is not the same as corn syrup.
I encourage you to pray about it and look into it yourself.
We may not be able to avoid it entirely, but at least limit the amount we consume by choosing our everyday food items like: jams and preserves, salad dressings, soups, tomato sauce and paste, and many other foods carefully. Read the ingredient labels. Be proactive in your family's health.
