The little pleasures in life

The older I get I find my self enjoying the little pleasures in life. Sometimes they are rather silly, sometimes sentimental and other times [to some] it may be down right ridiculous. But nonetheless, my days are brighter because of them!

One of my newest little pleasures is putting bows on Mindy Lou. We needed to get her a new collar and while we were at the pet store I saw 2 cute bows and decided to purchase them. It wasn't
until after we got in the car I realized how much we paid for them! $6.99 for two 1 inch bows! Well
my quest begun... A few days later we went  to another pet store. Here they were $9.99 for four 1 inch bows (no I did not buy them)! I thought about buying ribbon and making them my self; but then I started to think they must make hair bows for girls and maybe that would work, so my quest continued... at WalMart in the personal care isle where hair brushes and supplies are were a pack of six 1 1/2 inch bows with metal clips that had small little teeth like grips, all 6 were $2.50, perfect! So for the next 6 hours I put different colored bows on her and took lots of pictures!

Another little pleasures I find enjoyable I've been doing for a couple of years now. Which is feeding the Hummingbirds. Every other morning after I put the dogs out and make a pot of coffee I go out and bring the Hummingbird feeders in. I clean them and then refill them and then hang them back out side. Feeding them starts in the middle of May and continues to September. These beautiful little creatures depend on the food being there and if I forget or if I am later then usual these tiny birds will start zooming around my head! Sometimes when we are going through a dry spell the feeders will be empty before evening, and when I'm outside again they will start zooming around my head, as if they are asking (or demanding) for me to refill the feeders! They are amazing to watch.

This little pleasure I have done nearly every year for the last 4 decades. And that is my garden... I like having pretty flowers. Although I do find that as I get older it has increasingly become more difficult for me to accomplish. I have a vision but after 10 years it still is not close to what I'd like it to be... The first picture (on the left) is a garden that I planted 3 years ago, so the plants are not very big. I also incorporated planters in it because I had them and needed to fill space. The one on the right I started about 9 years ago it is in the front yard and off to the side, bordering the grass area from the woods. It has become the area where all our family pets are buried.
And takes up a huge area that is [in some places] about 30ft. wide.
It extends approximately 100ft. long. So I have a lot more work to
do!

One other little pleasure I enjoy is drawing. So I started making greeting cards. My sister sold them at her store for a few of years but she has since retired and now they sit in a drawer. But I still love drawing and continue drawing although not as much as I use to. I just don't know what do to with them! The card on the right is an unfinished Christmas card with Missy May and Mindy Lou...

The next little pleasure is one that again involves my dogs. I love talking, or speaking for them. First let me say that my pups can be very expressive and animated. So whenever the opportunity arises I will say comments to my husband as though it is one of the pups that is actually saying it to him. This [of course] drives him a little crazy, which adds to the fun!

My last little pleasure I'll tell you about is writing. I love writing! Which is one of the reasons I started this blog. I never use to like writing and found it difficult to express my thoughts on paper until after my son Timmy died. I've written a children's story that I would like to have published as a book. But I didn't know how to make that happen. It is a story about two dogs (What else would it be about?). I'm very proud of my story.

The name of the book is:
"The Adventures of Maxwell House Doglyan and Missy May Doglyan"
Volume One: Trouble One and Trouble Too...
An excerpt from chapter 1 - A New Day
The sun was beginning to come up over the tree tops and the birds were singing their songs of thankfulness for a new day.  It was chilly out and the cold air was blowing through my ears.  There was some frost on the grass and a few small piles of snow near the tree line.
“Max, Max,” Missy called, “come and see what I found.”
I slowly sniffed my way over to her. I love spring time.  There are always so many new things to smell!
“Look, look what I found,” Missy bellowed, jumping up and down and around all at the same time, and I wondered, how does she do that?
“Are you crazy?” I retorted, “That’s the bone you buried last year!”  The bone was covered in dirt and looked like some other creature had nibbled on it too.  There were bugs all over it, and a worm hanging down from the middle of it.  There was some other stuff on it too, that I would rather not smell.  And if I don’t want to smell it… well, let’s not say anymore!
“But won’t Mommy and Daddy be proud that I found my lost bone?”  She asked, looking precocious and completely pathetic at the same time.
“We’ll see,” I said as I walked away to find a good place to do my business, “we’ll see…”

An excerpt from  chapter 8 - A Dinosaur
We both stood as still as could be.  Missy’s lip was curled up on one side of her mouth and she was making a low growling l sound.
“Missy, I don’t think…” But as soon as I spoke she jumped over the little stream.
So I jumped over the stream too, startling a mouse that was hiding and was scurrying away. I secretly was wishing that I could chase after it, instead of my sister. But I knew I needed to be a good big brother and a brave boy.
The ground was full of dead limbs, and brush.  There were only a few green leaves beginning to grow on the trees and on the ground.  Missy didn’t even notice that the mouse had run in front of her and under a tree limb nearby.  Sneaking closer, we hid behind a large dead tree stump,  we strained our necks to look.
The monster was tall and yellow, and was as tall as the trees.  His teeth were the size of fence posts and each of his feet were as large as a car!  I sniffed the air to get his scent but only smelled some gasoline and oil.
“Max, is that a monster?” Missy asked with a little whimper.  Her hair was still standing up on her back and her ears were moving this way and that, trying to listen and be ready for the danger ahead of us.
We were both almost crawling on our bellies as we inched forward moving from one tree to another.  We were trying hard not to be seen by the monster.
“Missy, I think I know what that big yellow monster is!”  I said in a hushed voice so that the monster would not hear us.  “I’ve seen them on TV with our dad.  It’s a DINOSAUR I whispered.
“A WHAT?” Missy asked, louder than she should have!
“Shush, it will hear us,” I said.  Dinosaurs are very dangerous!  They eat everything,” I told her.
“Even dogs?” she asked shocked.  “Oh my, Max what should we do?” she continued, now that she was beginning to understand the danger, she was becoming more afraid.
“Missy, they chomp on trees and tear down houses!  They could eat Mom and Dad!  They can hurt anything.  They are really bad!”  I didn’t want to scare her any more than she already was, but we needed to make a plan!

It's a fun little book with over 9,200 words and  11 chapters. I tried to incorporate family values and team work throughout the story as well as suspense. I got the idea when our neighbors begun building their home and I watched my pups reaction to the back hoe that was used to remove trees and such. Anyway maybe I can get it published one day...

  1. I love the drawing of Missy and Mindy helping decorate the tree! I have never seen it before! And I've always loved your book Trouble One and Trouble Too.
