Romans 8:5; For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.
I’ve noticed that the Bible often seems to have an upside-down view of life.
Like when Jesus in Luke chapter 6 looked directly at His disciples and said, “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.”
You see Jesus knew that the life of His followers would be a difficult one and He was teaching them that “blessings” often come through difficult things: like poverty, hunger, sorrow, and even hatred.
Jesus was teaching them (as well as us) to have a heavenly mindset. Jesus knew that they would need (and we would need) to view the hard things that happen in light of what is to come.
Jesus also taught this same lesson in reverse, by associating desirable things with the word “woe.” He said, “Woe to you” who are rich and well-fed, and to those who laugh and are flattered.
Why? When we become too satisfied with the blessings of the present day, it’s easy to take our eyes off of our eternal purpose. The lesson is clear: we need to maintain a heavenly perspective.
We must remember to take comfort in Jesus’ promise that our eternal future is filled with hope and look at life’s trials and difficulties through the truth and hope of God’s Word.
The Lord makes it clear that evil is always right there with us.
But even more important—and more powerful! — the Lord also makes clear that if we belong to Jesus, then the Spirit of God is right there in us.
This means that in the very presence of evil …the Spirit is at work to give us life and to set our minds on living for God.
So, what does it mean, to have your mind set on the Spirit?
It means that, in the midst of making money, having fun, finding fulfillment, and just living our lives… that our primarily concern is in drawing closer to Him, following His will and showing love, helping others, speaking truth, but above all, loving God and seeking His glory.
The trouble with the world is that it is content with just making money, having fun, and fulfilling itself — that is all it wants.
But the mind set on the Spirit desires that God is glorified in all these things.
When our mind is set on the Spirit, we look at the events of life from God's point of view, not from the world's.
Our value system is changed and it touches everything you do.
The important thing in seeking to fulfill our needs, is that God is glorified.
That is what makes the difference. That is the mind — set on the Spirit.
It does not remove us from life — it puts us right back into it. But it does it with a different point of view.
Remember: LIFE HAPPENS LET’S ENJOY IT.
If we want our life to reflect the One to whom we belong, then we need to pay attention to where and on what we set my mind.
That’s why it’s important to take time to read and reflect on God’s Word. Scripture and prayer help to align our minds and lives with Christ each day.
The question you must ask yourself — Is your mind set on Christ today?
