Genesis 1: 1-2 Part II

“¹ In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. ² The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.”

The first verse declares the greatest fact known to man. . . the existence of the universe, and it connects to the greatest fact made known by revelation. . . the existence of a God who creates.

Today I want to speak on what’s known as the “Gap Theory”

and although the Specifics on it vary, the gap theory can be traced back to 2 centuries ago in an effort to explain “prehistoric” fossils.

Where Christian leaders introduced the idea that a gap of time is missing between Genesis 1: 1 and Genesis 1: 2. This idea, which undermines the Bible’s integrity, is now making a comeback. It’s promoted all over the internet and YouTube.

According to the gap theory there’s a very long gap of time between verses 1 & 2.

They claim. . .

1.   That God made the world, and then something happened that caused it to “become” without form and void.
2.    Which allows the gap to be a long duration. . . even millions of years.
3.   And during this gap, so called “prehistoric” creatures lived and died.

Gap theorists believe that Lucifer was in charge of this “gap” world, but when he fell from grace; God destroyed that world and “recreated” or “remade” the world in six literal 24-hour days, as outlined in the book of Genesis.

However, this idea fails because it lacks biblical support and puts death before sin when Scripture describes death is the consequence for sin.

And although at first glance the gap theory seems to provide a means of solving many problems between the claims of science and the Bible. . .
It really goes a bit too far. . . For instance, we Christians are quick to point out that the theory of evolution has never actually been proven. 
That it remains but a theory [at least in the true definition of the word] and there are great gaps in the attempted proof for evolution.

And the same must be said when it comes to “theories” such as “the gap theory”

I personally feel that the theory is insupportable. Others may disagree, but we must remember clearly one thing. . . It is at best but a theory.
And if we Christians insist that science has not proved evolution as a fact, and should remain an unproved theory, then we must also insist that theories like the gap idea. . . that deal with the Biblical record are also unproved theories and not facts. We must not treat them as though they were final and proven facts.

So, what can we actually learn from Genesis 1: 1 & 2?

That God is both the subject and the author of all that follows.

He is responsible for everything, both seen and unseen.

For it was, “In the beginning that the uncreated God. . . created.”

Time and space and dimensions and matter all had a beginning. But God has no beginning. . .

Our Creator gave everything form and substance, structure and life.

And if it had a beginning it will also have an ending.

Today’s scripture tells us that the earth was formless and empty. That is the scene set before us here.

God’s first stage in creating the earth was to make a scene in which He was going to display his mastery. . . how darkness, formlessness and emptiness. . . were eliminated.

Then Holy Spirit of God hovered over the waters.” 

This is the first mention of the Spirit of God in the Bible.   

The explanation of everything that follows in Genesis 1, is this presence and work of the Spirit of God.

This world is not merely some great machine, or a simulation in a computer clanking away and without remorse. We are not victims of forces greater than we can control. . . NO!

It is under the control of the wisdom and the power of God.

God intends an end, and he moves to accomplish it. God always has and is continuing to move in history.
