Genesis 1: 2-3
“2 The earth was without form and void, and
darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over
the face of the waters.
3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and
there was light.
The purpose of God is revealed in today’s scripture verses…
Notice that, in these verses, there is a moving toward
order, out of disorder, and form, out of formlessness. Notice that something,
comes out of nothing.
The Spirit of God is bringing light out of darkness. . . and He is moving to accomplish His purpose. The first step God took, was to create
light. . . He said, "Let there be light," and there was light.
And as we know light, is essential to all forms of life.
Without light there can be no life.
Again, God is not trying to give a scientific explanation of
where light comes from. Because Scripture… because God’s Word is trying to underline
for our understanding the fact, …that light is from God. Light is a symbol of
God.
That is the point Scripture is seeking to make.
This is why the moment God makes light, he pronounces it
"good."
What constitutes goodness is that which only relates in some
way to God Himself. God is good, and only that which is of Him, or from Him,
can be called good.
That is why God said light is good, because it is from Him
and is characteristic of His nature.
We read in 1 John 1:5, “This is the message we have heard
from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at
all.”
John does not say, "Light is God." That would be
pantheism.
We do not worship light. But the Scripture says God is
light, because the characteristics which we observe in light are also true of
God.
Basically, there are three levels at which man can
understand truth.
1st The physical – the material.
2nd The soul,
(which is dealing with our minds and our emotions).3rd: The spiritual.
Now notice that light can also be viewed from three levels.
There is physical light, which allows you to see me on this
video…
Then there is a mental level or the cognitive level.
For
instance, we speak of light as knowledge, or truth.
Someone says to you, "Could you give me a little light on this problem?" . . .they’re not asking you to turn on a lamp. They’re simply asking if you could explain it to them.
Someone says to you, "Could you give me a little light on this problem?" . . .they’re not asking you to turn on a lamp. They’re simply asking if you could explain it to them.
And also similarly, when we say, “Oh, yes, I see."
Which is the same term a blind person would use if they regained their eye sight. . . "Oh! I see!"
So, light occurs on the level of mental and emotional reaction.
And there is the spiritual level, which deals with the nature and the character of God himself.
That light is related with the very life of God.
Just as 1 John 1: 4-5 says: "In him was life, and the life was the light of men," and "God is light and in Him is no darkness at all,"
And also, as Jesus said of himself in John 8:12, "I am the light of the world. If any man follows me he shall not walk in darkness but shall have the light of life,"

I point this out because we must understand that truth is
not to be viewed only on the physical and material level.
That is the problem of many when reading the Genesis
account. If we limit our understanding of the account of creation only to only the physical, and material creation we miss a major point in God’s revelation throughout His entire Word.
God is revealing His truth from Genesis 1: 1 to Revelation
22: 21.
Paul tells us the meaning of light in 2 Corinthians 4: 6, when he says,
“6 For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.”

Here are the different levels relating to the meaning of
light, clearly brought together with reference to the first day of creation.
God bless, as we continue with "In the Beginning"
