Mark 4:35-41
Jesus calms the sea.
On the same day, when
evening had come, He said to them, “Let us cross over to the other side.”
Now when they had left the multitude, they took Him along in the boat as He
was. And other little boats were also with Him. And a great windstorm arose,
and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling. But He was
in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to Him, “Teacher,
do You not care that we are perishing?”
Then He arose and
rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased
and there was a great calm. But He said to them, “Why are you so fearful?
How is it that you have no faith?” And they feared exceedingly, and said to
one another, “Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!”
The difficulties of life
have often been compared to stormy seas.
They come upon us whether
we like it or not. And they can terrify us.
They knock us around and
threaten to destroy all our stability and security.
At times, we aren’t sure
whether we’ll even survive them.
And we don’t know how long
they will last.
Here in Mark we’re told
that the disciples were terrified that the boat was going to break up and
everyone would die.
But Jesus was asleep…
(notice how Mark notes
that Jesus is resting on a cushion… which only adds to the contrast between
Jesus’ tranquility and the disciples’ panic)
You see…
Storms don’t worry Jesus.
He’s right there with us during them, but he’s perfectly calm about them.
He isn’t terrified; he
isn’t impatient; and he isn’t worried.
To us, it can sometimes
seem that Jesus is asleep when we are going through a storm in our life.
We wonder why He doesn’t
do something. And then we can start to wonder whether he even knows the trouble
we’re in. Whether he cares.
We believe He’s there, but
sometimes He seems just as asleep as he was during the storm that day on the
Sea of Galilee.
But we must realize that
sometimes He delivers us from the storms of life,
And sometimes He gives us
the grace to pass through them.
But either way, Jesus will
always see us through the storms of life.
AND I WANT TO
REMIND YOU… LIFE HAPPENS LET’S ENJOY IT!
Also notice that in our
passage of scripture today…
Jesus didn’t hear the
storm…
But He did hear the cries
of His children! He always hears the cry of his child.
