Psalm 3:3 “But You, O
Lord, are a shield for me, my glory and the One who lifts up my head.”
The reality, in the life
of a believer is that there will be times that our only source of strength and
encouragement will be from the LORD. That we will encounter periods where we will
be so discouraged and in despair and no one will be able to help us get out of
our difficulty or our dilemma. It will be during those times that what we
know about God, will be our only hope and help.
The psalmist David
remembered that the LORD was the only One who could lift his head up and give
him the comfort he needed in order to KEEP pressing forward.
When we are experiencing despair;
and troubles keep on mounting, we must know that God is our only help.
There will be times when
God’s in His providence will put us in situations where we can only call on Him
for relief.
And He is faithful to
deliver us from our despair and from the hand of the enemy.
Have you ever given much
thought about God being our shield?
Think about what a shield
does…
It serves as protection
and acts as a guard to defend, and give shelter to someone or something.
And today's verse says
that the Lord, is a shield around us…
Have you ever had the
experience of a rock hitting your windshield?
Well, the windshield was a
type of shield. It protects us from being hurt.
And, our homes are a type
of shield… because it shelters us from the elements like — rain, snow, the heat,
and the cold.
But there is no better
shelter, or protector, then God Himself.
In the same way, the Lord is
our shield. He protects us from harm’s way, and He guards us from danger… He defends us against accusations… and
shelters us when we are weak…
There are many verses in
the Bible that refer to God as our shield.
Here are two of my
favorites.
“Thou art my hiding place
and my shield: I hope in thy word” (Psalm 119:114).
And…
“For the LORD God is a sun
and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold
from them that walk uprightly” (Psalm 84:11).
And contrary to many
popular teachings; the good things that
He gives to those who walk uprightly are not riches, honor, and health;
But...
The good things of God
are: peace of conscience…
the joy in the Holy Spirit
in one’s life…
the appreciation of God's
presence in one’s life…
and the blessed assurance
of eternity in heaven with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
It is these good things that
God never withholds from the godly…
The second half of verse 3
says, “…my glory and the One who lifts up my head”
Is God your glory? The
word glory is the translation of a Hebrew word meaning “weight” or
“significance.”
Some people measure their
worth by beauty, or their intelligence, for some it’s money, power, or prestige.
But David, who wrote this
Psalm, found his security and worth in God.
He said that many stood
against him. He heard their cruel voices and was tempted to believe them, to
give way to discouragement and depression. Nevertheless, he comforted and
strengthened his heart with these words: "You, O Lord, are a shield for me, my
glory and the One who lifts up my head."
