Proverbs 25: 11
Like apples of gold in settings of silver Is a word spoken
in right circumstances. (NASB)
Have you ever met someone who knows just what to say at the
right moment?
My husband is one of those people; he usually knows just
what to say to the right moment.
And its wisdom that gives them the ability to
say the right things at the right time.
Our verse describes this “like apples of gold in settings of
silver.”
Imagine in your minds eye the beauty of this as an art
piece… not only is it lovely to the eye… but also the amazing wealth of such an
art piece.
This is the way today’s verse compares how valuable a word
spoken just at the right time is… and how the appropriate words spoken can be appreciated
by someone.
We see Jesus doing this again and again in His life.
When the Pharisees and Sadducees would ask Him a question that
they thought was unanswerable or would cause Him to incriminate himself.
Jesus would speak a [the] perfect word at the perfect
time.
And in order for us to be able to speak a valuable word at
the right time we need to have our ears open in two ways...
1st, we need to have our
ears open to God.
He is the One who can give us the perfect thing to say… …because
He is the One who can see into every heart and know just what to say…
But to know these kinds of statements we must walk close to
God…
2nd, we need to
have our ears open to those around us.
Far too many of us are never able to speak these kinds of
words, because we don't even know that others around us need to hear them.
We can be so preoccupied with our own trials and troubles…
or quite honestly with our own desires… that we don't hear the hearts of those
who are struggling and desperately need of a word of encouragement.
James 1:19, encourages us to “...be quick to hear and slow to
speak.”
This is the kind of wisdom that will allow us to hear others…
To hear their hurts and their problems… so that we can speak
in a way that brings healing and grace to them.
Also, knowing the right time to speak is advantageous for
both the speaker and hearer.
There will be times that keeping silent will also has its
place.
Ecclesiastes 3:7 informs us, that there is a time to be
silent and there’s an appropriate time to speak.
So, it’s often hard to know what to say and when to say it.
The Holy Spirit will help us to discern what is
appropriate.
He will help us use the right words at the right time and in
the right manner…
It will be then that we can offer these apples of gold in
settings of silver to those around us who desperately need to hear more than
just words - they need to hear the right words - the perfect words for their
circumstances.
Christians should have mouths filled with “apples of gold in
settings of silver.”
The right word spoken at the right time… in the right way…
in the right moment… is astonishingly powerful, beautiful, valuable, and
precious.
God bless!
