1 Thessalonians 4: 11-12
11 and to make it your ambition to lead a quiet life and
attend to your own business and work with your hands, just as we commanded you,
12 so that you will behave properly toward outsiders and not be in any need.
Let’s look at this in three different ways...
1st. We should be quiet rather than
hurried.
Oh, how busyness will keep us always running… never taking
time to rest in... or trust the Lord…
2nd. We should be quiet rather than anxious. Instead of getting
upset about our circumstances in life… we should be people who trust that God
is in control…
Just like a child sound asleep in the arms of their father
during a thunderstorm because they know their father will protect them.
3rd. We should be quiet rather than obnoxious…
You see the Lord wants us to be steady in the way we live
our lives.
God wants us to impact our society with our consistency of
behavior and attitudes… We are to be steady… not pushy…
Like Christ… direct… but also loving.
And we are to be “working with our hands” …
Now, Paul is not saying we should all desire to be
blue-collar workers.
He is simply telling us that people should earn their own
living.
In other words, we should resist the “entitlement” mentality...
You see, this is what God designed us to do...
The believer’s life should look dramatically different
from the unbelievers!
– Now in light of that – verse 12 makes sense: Then people
who are not Christians will respect the way we live…
People will respect us because our life will be dramatically
different…
Our life should be an example without ever having to say a
word –
And though some people may mock you… people tend to respect
someone who lives and stands up for something they believe in whole-heartedly.
Especially if that is backed up by action.
